42. Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge - Area Map.

Location:

Just South of the California State line near Tulelake and Newell, CA.

Habitat:

Mostly open water and leased crop lands. There are adjacent uplands including cliffs. A large marsh area with some interesting birding potential has recently been developed at the southeast corner of the Refuge visible on the Lava Beds Road. An interesting mix of neotropical migrant and resident passerine species can be observed in the scattered trees in the upland aeas along Hill Road.

Distinct Features:

A twelve-mile auto tour route, paved or graveled all weather road, allows wildlife observation throughout the year.

Birds to Look For:

Clark's and Western Grebes, American White Pelican, White-faced Ibis, Tundra Swan, Northern Pintail, Cackling Canada, Snow, Ross's and Greater White-fronted Geese, Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, Prairie Falcon, Boneparte's Gull, Barn Owl, Caspian Tern, Loggerhead Shrike, Northern Skrike, Say's Pheobe, Rock, Bewick's and Canyon Wrens, Townsend's Solitaire, Mountain Bluebird, Common Bushtit, Spotted and California Towhees.

Mammals to look for:

Mule deer, muskrat, coyote and yellow-bellied marmot are frequently observed. Less commonly seen are river otter, bobcat (both regular) and mountain lion (rarely observed.)

Other Items of Interest:

The Visitor Center provides feeder viewing from inside the Center and access to Sheepy Ridge Trail and the Discovery Marsh Trail. Also, visitors may obtain updated information about recent bird sightings. The center is open both weekdays and weekends.

Directions:

The tour route entrance is 4 miles south of the Refuge Visitor Center on Hill Rd. The Center can be reached from Highway 97 or Highway 39 by the State line road (Highway 161) or the East-West Road from Tulelake. GPS: 121° 34' 12.96" W, 41° 56' 32.84 N.
